How we research, write and update content on FytFree
Our Content Standards
Every article, calculator description and guide on FytFree is built around four principles:
- Accuracy. Claims are based on published research, established nutritional formulas and recognised public-health guidelines. We do not promote fad diets, miracle supplements or exaggerated outcomes.
- Transparency. We explain the methodology behind every calculator, state clearly that results are estimates, and disclose the limitations of online tools. When evidence is mixed or uncertain, we say so.
- Clarity. Content is written for a general adult audience. Technical concepts like BMR, TDEE, glycemic index and macronutrients are explained in plain language with practical examples.
- Practicality. The goal of every article is for the reader to come away with something they can actually do in real life — not abstract theory.
We never prescribe medical advice, diagnose conditions or claim that our tools can treat any illness. FytFree is an educational resource that complements — not replaces — guidance from qualified healthcare professionals.
Sources We Use
Our content draws from publicly available, peer-reviewed sources. The most frequently cited references are:
- Mifflin-St Jeor equation — Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST et al. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 1990. Used in our Calorie Calculator, Macro Calculator, Calorie Deficit Calculator and Meal Plan Generator.
- ISSN position stand on protein — Jäger R et al. Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2017. Used in our Protein Calculator and protein-related articles.
- International Tables of Glycemic Index — Atkinson FS et al. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2021. Compiled by the University of Sydney. Used in our Glycemic Index Database.
- Compendium of Physical Activities — Ainsworth BE et al. Arizona State University. Used in our Steps to Calories Calculator and walking content.
- EFSA Scientific Opinion on Dietary Reference Values for Water, 2010. Used in our Water Intake Calculator.
- USDA FoodData Central and Open Food Facts. Used in Food Search and Barcode Scanner.
- FAO/WHO/UNU Expert Consultation on Human Energy Requirements, 2001. Source for activity multiplier categories.
The full list and the formulas behind every tool are documented on our How Our Calculators Work page.
How Calculators Are Built
Every calculator on FytFree follows the same development process:
- Select an established formula. We use formulas that have been validated in peer-reviewed comparative studies for general adult populations, not novel or proprietary equations.
- Document the inputs and assumptions. Activity multipliers, safety minimums, ranges and edge cases are written down before any code is shipped.
- Apply safety floors. Calorie tools enforce minimums of 1,200 kcal/day for women and 1,400–1,500 kcal/day for men to discourage unsafe targets.
- Explain the limitations. Every calculator page includes a clear section on what the formula cannot capture (body composition, medical conditions, medications) and when to seek professional guidance.
- Process inputs locally. All calculations happen in your browser. No personal health data is sent to our servers or stored in any database.
How Often We Review Content
FytFree content is reviewed on a rolling basis:
- Articles and guides are reviewed at least once per year, and updated sooner if research changes, public-health guidance shifts, or readers point out specific issues.
- Calculator formulas are reviewed whenever a major update to a referenced equation or compendium is published.
- Glycemic index and food data are updated when new editions of source databases are released.
- Legal pages (Privacy Policy, Terms, Cookie Policy, Medical Disclaimer) are reviewed at least once per year and after any change in tracking, advertising or hosting partners.
When an article is materially updated, the modified date is reflected in our internal records and may be added to the article itself.
Corrections Policy
If you spot a factual error, outdated reference, broken link, or misleading wording on any FytFree page, please tell us. We take corrections seriously.
How to report a correction:
- Email contact@fytfree.com with the specific page URL and what should be changed.
- Where possible, include a source (peer-reviewed study, official guideline, or recognised authority) so we can verify quickly.
How we handle reported issues:
- Clear factual errors — corrected as soon as we have confirmed the source.
- Outdated references — replaced with the current edition or guideline.
- Ambiguous wording — rewritten for clarity.
- Subjective interpretation — we may add nuance or alternative perspectives rather than make a one-sided edit.
We aim to respond to correction requests within 1–2 business days. We do not pay for, sell or accept content placements that would compromise these standards.
